Mofokeng Turned Down R15,000 a Month to Join Pirates for R6,000

A Sundowns offer of R15,000 was turned down by Relebohile Mofokeng, who instead chose to join Orlando Pirates for R6,000.

Sechaba Mofokeng has disclosed that his son, Relebohile Mofokeng, chose to join Orlando Pirates rather than accept a more lucrative offer from Mamelodi Sundowns. He believed that Orlando Pirates provided him with a more advantageous road to senior football.

After establishing himself at Pirates, Relebohile went on to win attention with Bafana Bafana and secure a move to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, a Belgian club. Since then, Relebohile has evolved into one of the most intriguing football talents in South Africa.

During his appearance on Giants, Sechaba said that Sundowns, operating under the leadership of club president Patrice Motsepe, made an offer to his son to join their Under-19 team at a monthly rate of R15,000. Prior to the possibility of the youngster being promoted to the club's reserve team in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), the aim was for him to exhibit his abilities and demonstrate his worth.

Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, presented a distinct business prospect. According to Sechaba, representatives of the club, lead by chairman Irvin Khoza, appeared at their residence with an offer of R6,000 per month for Relebohile to play in the DDC. Khoza was interested in acquiring the youngster's services.

Due to the fact that the difference between the two offers was R9,000 per month, Sundowns was the more financially appealing choice.

Following an explanation of the financial repercussions that would result from selecting either club, Sechaba disclosed that he had given his son the authority to make the ultimate decision.

Relebohile was adamant about joining Pirates, even if the wage disparity was a significant factor. The young footballer's father pointed to players who had successfully made the transition from the club's development structures to the senior team and stated that the young footballer believed the club had a stronger pathway from its development structures into the senior team.

This selection proved to be significant since Relebohile advanced through the Pirates' development system and eventually became an influential part of the first squad. Overall, the decision was significant.

With the move to Pirates helping to prepare the way for his climb to international recognition and European play, his journey exemplifies how putting development opportunities ahead of immediate cash gains may have a significant impact on the trajectory of a young footballer's career.
