Belgian Journalist Explains What Makes Mofokeng Stand Out At Union SG

Relebohile Mofokeng is earning recognition at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for an attacking influence that extends beyond goals and assists, with Belgian football publication Walfoot highlighting how the South African international is helping improve the team’s overall play.

The former Orlando Pirates attacker has made an encouraging start at the Belgian club, recording four goals and two assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. His contribution has become particularly important as Union manage the absence of several attacking players.

According to Walfoot, Mofokeng has helped fill the gap left by Promise David, who joined Brighton and Hove Albion, and Mohammed Fuseini, who moved to Derby County. Other attacking options, including Ilan Hurtevent, Kevin Rodriguez and Mateo Biondic, have also faced injuries or other difficulties since the start of the season.

Despite those setbacks, Union have maintained an impressive scoring record. Walfoot reported that the club had scored 27 goals in nine Pro League matches, while registering eight goals in three European fixtures.

Journalist Scott Crabbe praised Mofokeng’s consistency, noting that the 21-year-old has already made a substantial contribution rather than needing an extended period to adapt to his new surroundings.

Crabbe also argued that Mofokeng offers qualities that are not always reflected in conventional statistics. Unlike attackers who rely heavily on runs behind opposing defences, the South African brings greater variety to Union’s attacking play through his pace, technical ability and movement.

His ability to link midfield with the final third has helped create opportunities for teammates and make the team less predictable in possession.

Crabbe pointed to Mofokeng’s performance against Cercle Brugge as an example of his tactical value. His movement, illustrated by his heatmap, showed him dropping deeper to collect the ball from defenders and help Union create numerical advantages in midfield.

The journalist also highlighted his combinations with Guilherme and Besfort Zeneli on the left flank, alongside his intelligent runs into the penalty area. Those movements can draw defenders away from their positions and create openings for other attackers.

Union’s next challenge is a league encounter against SK Beveren on Saturday. The club will hope Mofokeng can maintain his form as it looks to keep pace with Club Brugge and KAA Gent in the standings.

For the South African, the growing praise reflects a role that goes beyond finishing chances, with his movement and link-up play becoming important parts of Union’s attacking approach.
