Rayners Reveals Sundowns' Plan to Break Golden Arrows' Resistance
Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has offered insight into the approach the Brazilians intend to take as they prepare to face Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals.
The highly anticipated encounter presents Sundowns with another opportunity to demonstrate their quality and continue their pursuit of silverware this season. However, with Golden Arrows expected to provide a difficult challenge, the Tshwane giants will need to be disciplined, patient and clinical in front of goal.
Rayners, who has become an important attacking option for Sundowns, understands that cup football often demands more than individual brilliance. The striker has acknowledged the threat posed by Golden Arrows and their head coach, Mandla Ncikazi, particularly when preparing to face a team with Sundowns' attacking quality.
His assessment suggests that Sundowns are aware of the tactical obstacles they must overcome if they are to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Rayners has particularly emphasised the importance of taking their chances early, explaining that Sundowns believe an early breakthrough could force Golden Arrows to abandon their defensive approach and create more space for the reigning South African heavyweights to exploit.
The Bafana Bafana international believes Sundowns regularly create opportunities against Arrows but must ensure their attacking efforts translate into goals. Failure to do so could allow their opponents to grow in confidence and make the contest increasingly uncomfortable.
Golden Arrows, meanwhile, will be looking to make a statement under returning coach Ncikazi. His tactical understanding of Sundowns makes the encounter particularly intriguing, as the Durban-based outfit will be eager to frustrate the hosts and take advantage of any mistakes.
Rayners has acknowledged Ncikazi's coaching ability but insists Sundowns must concentrate on executing their own plan rather than becoming distracted by their opponents.
The striker also highlighted the importance of confidence on the ball, hard work and determination, qualities that could prove decisive in a fixture where a place in the next round is at stake.
The match is scheduled for Tuesday evening, 3 November 2026, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, with kick-off set for 19:00 South African time. Sundowns enter the contest following an impressive 4-1 victory over Durban City, while Golden Arrows will be eager to respond after their recent defeat to AmaZulu.
For Sundowns, the objective is clear: convert their attacking dominance into goals and avoid giving Arrows an opportunity to dictate the match.
Rayners' comments reveal a straightforward but potentially effective approach. If Sundowns score early, they could force Golden Arrows to open up and create the spaces required to secure victory.
However, the Brazilians will need to remain focused throughout the encounter because knockout football leaves little room for costly mistakes.
With Rayners leading the attacking charge, Sundowns will hope their tactical preparation, experience and clinical finishing are enough to secure progression and keep their Carling Knockout Cup ambitions alive.
