Orlando Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has publicly defended Oswin Appollis following growing questions about the winger's reduced playing time at the Buccaneers.
Appollis, who is now in his third season with the Soweto giants, has found himself spending more time on the bench in recent weeks. His situation has sparked discussions among supporters, with some questioning why a player of his quality has not been receiving regular opportunities in Abdeslam Ouaddou's starting line-up.
However, Vilakazi believes the winger should not be written off because of his recent lack of game time. Speaking on the Omni Audio podcast, the former Pirates midfielder suggested that confidence could be playing a role in Appollis' current situation.
He made his position clear with a strong statement that has attracted attention from football supporters.
“Let me say something that will make everyone think and talk – you can’t bring a good man down,” Vilakazi said.
The Pirates legend acknowledged that there could be issues behind the scenes involving Appollis, the technical team or club management. However, he insisted that the player's footballing ability has not suddenly disappeared.
“Something might have happened between him and the coach or maybe the management… But we want to see him in the field of play because every time he is on the field, he gives us the class that we all know of him.”
Vilakazi also questioned how a player who has previously demonstrated his quality could suddenly become ineffective.
“How possible is it that Oswin Appollis can become a bad player overnight? It can't be. Every time he gets an opportunity, he does well,” he added.
The former Buccaneers star also recalled expecting Appollis to feature during the recent Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs. He believed the winger could have provided an attacking spark, particularly if introduced as a substitute.
Vilakazi suggested that Ouaddou might have been planning to introduce Appollis later in the match, explaining that managing players and balancing the team are sometimes important coaching decisions.
He further emphasised the winger's importance to South African football, pointing to his status as a Bafana Bafana international.
“He is a key man and we need to show respect. He is a Bafana Bafana player and is key there as well,” Vilakazi stated.
The Pirates legend also recalled the criticism Appollis received following the World Cup, when questions were raised about his performances and Hugo Broos' decision to select him.
According to Vilakazi, such criticism could affect a player's confidence, making it important for the technical team to support him while helping him understand his responsibilities within the team.
For Orlando Pirates supporters, Appollis' situation remains an interesting talking point as the club continues its campaign under Ouaddou.
The winger still has an opportunity to fight his way back into the starting eleven, but he will need to make the most of every opportunity he receives.
Vilakazi's message is clear: Appollis has not lost his quality, and Pirates should continue believing in what he can offer.
Can Oswin Appollis reclaim his starting position at Orlando Pirates, or is Ouaddou right to manage his playing time?
