Orlando Pirates have attracted unexpected international attention after several New Zealand All Blacks rugby players were spotted wearing the Buccaneers' famous black jerseys during their arrival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The surprising appearance quickly generated excitement among South African football supporters, particularly Pirates fans, as it happened on the same day the Soweto giants were preparing for their highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
The All Blacks shared footage of their rrival's ial media on Saturday, 31 October 2026, showing members of the squad arriving in Scotland ahead of their upcoming international rugby commitments. However, it was the appearance of the Orlando Pirates 2026/27 home jerseys that became the biggest talking point among South African supporters.
Among the players spotted wearing the Buccaneers' colours was Rieko Ioane, one of the most recognisable stars in New Zealand rugby. Seeing internationally recognised rugby players representing a South African football club created an unexpected crossover between two major sporting cultures.
The timing made the moment even more interesting because Pirates were preparing for their crucial derby encounter against their bitter rivals at FNB Stadium.
Abdeslam Ouaddou's team eventually gave their supporters another reason to celebrate by defeating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1. Yanela Mbuthuma opened the scoring before Pule Mmodi brought Amakhosi level. Tshepang Moremi subsequently scored the decisive goal to secure all three points for the Buccaneers.
The footage also attracted reactions from South African celebrities and football supporters. Popular DJ and music producer Prince Kaybee joined the excitement, welcoming the New Zealand rugby stars. One Pirates supporter celebrated the moment with the caption, "Imnyama lento."
The development comes after Pirates recently showcased their third jersey at South Africa Fashion Week through a presentation titled 'From Field to Fashion'.
The All Blacks' appearance in Pirates colours has provided another unexpected opportunity for the club to demonstrate its growing cultural appeal beyond South African football.
