Rayners Sends Strong Warning To Golden Arrows As Sundowns Prepare For Crucial Carling Knockout Battle
PRETORIA – Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has warned his teammates against underestimating Golden Arrows ahead of their Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter, insisting that a fast start and clinical finishing will be crucial if the Brazilians are to secure a place in the semi-finals.
The Tshwane giants were scheduled to welcome Abafana Bes’thende to Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, with kick-off set for 19:00. Sundowns entered the encounter determined to continue their pursuit of domestic silverware after an encouraging run of results.
Despite their impressive squad and experience in knockout competitions, Rayners understands that cup football presents a different challenge. The Bafana Bafana international believes that opponents often approach matches against Sundowns with carefully prepared tactical plans, making it important for the defending champions to remain patient and take their opportunities.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, the striker explained why his team must be prepared for a difficult evening.
"Knockout games are always difficult to play because you don't know what to expect from the other team," Rayners said.
"But we know how to win games like this, especially when it becomes difficult. Our coaches will analyse the game to give us feedback and information about Golden Arrows."
The two teams are already familiar with each other, having faced one another three times during the 2026/27 campaign. Sundowns had recorded two victories, while Golden Arrows had managed one win.
Their most dramatic meeting came during the MTN8 semi-finals, when the aggregate score finished 3-3 before Masandawana progressed to the final under the away-goals rule. Their September Betway Premiership encounter also produced an entertaining contest, with Sundowns claiming a narrow 2-1 victory.
However, Rayners knows that previous results will count for little when the teams meet again.
Another important storyline is the return of experienced coach Mandla Ncikazi to Golden Arrows. The former Orlando Pirates technical team member recently returned to the Durban-based club as head coach following the end of his five-year association with the Buccaneers.
Rayners acknowledged Ncikazi's coaching ability and the tactical difficulties his team could create.
He believes Sundowns must concentrate on their own performance, maintain confidence in possession and work hard throughout the encounter.
One of the striker's biggest concerns is ensuring that Sundowns do not waste the opportunities they create.
"I hope we will advance to the semi-finals. For us as a team, we always try to get opportunities against Arrows," he explained.
"But we just have to make sure we punish them as early as possible. Once we score first, then we know the game will open up."
Sundowns entered the cup fixture after an emphatic 4-1 league victory over Durban City, while Golden Arrows were looking to respond after suffering a 1-0 defeat against AmaZulu.
The Carling Knockout competition also represents an important opportunity for Sundowns to add another domestic trophy to their collection following their disappointment in the CAF Champions League.
For Rayners, the objective is straightforward: take responsibility in front of goal, help the team overcome a difficult opponent and secure progression.
Golden Arrows, however, have demonstrated that they cannot be dismissed easily, particularly with Ncikazi now leading the technical team.
