Siwelele FC have received a timely boost ahead of their upcoming Carling Knockout clash against Kaizer Chiefs after experienced striker Zakhele Lepasa returned from injury, marking his first appearance since April.
The 29-year-old forward made his long-awaited comeback during Siwelele's 3-2 defeat against Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Friday, 30 October. Although the Bloemfontein-based side failed to secure a positive result, Lepasa's return was an encouraging development for head coach Godfrey Mosoetsa as the club looks to improve its attacking options.
Lepasa was introduced in the 84th minute as Siwelele desperately searched for a late equaliser. However, Marumo Gallants managed to protect their advantage and claim all three points.
The striker has endured a difficult period on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury that eventually required surgery. His absence deprived Siwelele of an experienced attacking option, but his return now offers the coaching staff another player capable of strengthening their forward line.
Lepasa brings considerable experience, having previously represented Orlando Pirates and earned 18 international caps for Bafana Bafana. He was also part of the South African squad that won bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
According to reports by iDiski Times, Siwelele have scored just nine goals in their opening nine league matches, with Michael Nguessan and Vincent Pule leading the scoring charts on two goals each. The club currently sits 14th with six points, highlighting the need for improvement.
His comeback comes at an important moment, with Siwelele preparing to face Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Friday in the Carling Knockout. Chiefs will also be eager to respond after their Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates.
Although Lepasa will need time to regain full match fitness, his return provides Siwelele with renewed attacking hope ahead of a challenging encounter.
