Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained the reasons behind Monnapule Saleng’s return to the first team after a difficult period at the club. The winger made his first competitive appearance of the season on Tuesday when Sundowns defeated Marumo Gallants 1-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup at Loftus Versfeld.

Saleng’s move from Orlando Pirates to Sundowns had been overshadowed by disciplinary issues that reportedly resulted in him being excluded from first-team activities. He had also missed the second leg of the CAF Champions League final and failed to report for pre-season training, leading to an extended period of training separately from the rest of the squad.

Following discussions involving Cardoso, the club’s sporting director, team captains and chairman, Sundowns decided to give the winger another opportunity to rejoin the team.

Speaking after the match, Cardoso emphasised the importance of treating players with dignity, explaining that the club's values do not support permanently excluding individuals from the team.

The Portuguese coach also revealed that introducing Saleng late in the match was a deliberate decision to demonstrate the club's confidence in him.

Cardoso explained that he could have brought on a more defensive player to protect Sundowns' narrow lead but instead chose to give Saleng an opportunity to contribute.

However, the coach made it clear that the winger would not receive preferential treatment. His future opportunities will depend on his performances, consistency and discipline.

Cardoso stressed that Saleng would be evaluated according to the same standards as every other player in the squad. Consistent performances could earn him more playing time, while poor displays could limit his opportunities.

Saleng's return represents an opportunity to rebuild his career at Chloorkop. However, he must demonstrate his commitment on and off the pitch if he hopes to establish himself in Sundowns' competitive attacking lineup.
