Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has provided an explanation for his decision to switch between a back-four and back-five defensive system, revealing that his tactical choices depend on the players available and the qualities of the opposition.
The Amakhosi coach explained that he does not rely on one particular defensive formation, as different situations can demand different tactical adjustments. Factors such as injuries, player availability and the playing style of upcoming opponents all influence the system he chooses for each match.
Da Cruz also made it clear that changing the team's defensive formation does not mean changing its attacking philosophy. He believes that Chiefs must maintain their offensive identity regardless of whether they line up with four or five defenders.
Explaining the reasons behind his decisions, the Chiefs tactician said that the availability of players, injury situations and the strengths of opposing teams are all considered when deciding which formation to use.
"Sometimes it is related to the players available, players injured or not, and sometimes it is related to the opponent," Da Cruz explained.
He further stressed that the most important thing is ensuring that the team's attacking principles remain consistent, irrespective of the defensive structure adopted for a particular game.
"What is important is that whether we play with a back five or a back four, the structure does not alter our offensive game model. We want to keep the same offensive ideas and principles to win matches," he said.
Da Cruz's remarks underline his preference for tactical flexibility at Naturena while ensuring that Kaizer Chiefs maintain a clear and consistent attacking identity as they continue their campaign.
