Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has questioned the consistency of officiating in the Betway Premiership despite his side securing a convincing 4-1 victory over Durban City on Saturday night.
The Portuguese coach expressed his frustration with decisions involving penalties awarded against Sundowns, suggesting that similar incidents involving his team have not always received the same treatment from match officials.
Speaking after the encounter, Cardoso made his position clear, saying: "You should go look at the penalties that was taken from Sundowns".
His comments suggest that he believes there have been questionable decisions involving the Brazilians in previous matches. Rather than focusing entirely on the comfortable victory, the coach used the opportunity to draw attention to what he considers inconsistencies in the handling of penalty situations.
The result against Durban City nevertheless represented an important achievement for Sundowns, who demonstrated their attacking quality by finding the net four times. Their performance helped them collect maximum points and maintain their pursuit of domestic success.
However, Cardoso's remarks have shifted some attention towards the standard of refereeing in South African football. Penalty decisions have frequently generated debate among coaches, players and supporters, particularly when similar incidents appear to produce different outcomes.
For Sundowns, the coach will want his players to remain focused on their performances as they continue competing across different competitions. Maintaining consistency and collecting points will remain important as the season progresses.
Cardoso's comments also raise questions about the need for greater consistency and clarity when referees assess incidents inside the penalty area.
Although Sundowns left the match with a 4-1 victory, their coach made it clear that he still had concerns about officiating standards.
