After Saturday's thrilling Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium, where Orlando Pirates defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1, they climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership table.
After a close game in which both teams had chances and battled for dominance, the Buccaneers came out on top. The victory meant a lot to Pirates, who moved into first place in the league, two points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns.
There was a lot of action in the early going because both teams wanted to attack. Even though it was a close game, neither team scored in the first half because they couldn't muster enough quality in the final third.
After the Chiefs lost the ball while attempting to attack, the first goal was scored. The Pirates wasted no time capitalising on the situation, and Yanela Mbuthuma scored the game-winning goal in a counterattack. His shot beat Chiefs goalie Brandon Petersen, though it looked like it took a deflection.
Due to the Chiefs' lightning-fast response, the Buccaneers barely had a moment to bask in their advantage. Amakhosi were level two minutes later on Pule Mmodi's goal, which came after Mfundo Vilakazi's cross went uncontrolled by Sipho Chaine. It was a perfect opportunity for Mmodi to score from close range.
The Chiefs started the first half on the offensive and continued to put the Pirates under pressure with their relentless pressing. The Buccaneers were unable to maintain possession, especially in key areas, and the score remained tied at 1-1 at halftime.
Captain Abdeslam During halftime, Ouaddou substituted Giamphani Lungu for Nkosikhona Ndaba. Also shifting to the left side was Deon Hotto, who had begun the match in an unfamiliar right-back position.
After making some adjustments, the Pirates were able to get back on top thanks to Tshepang Moremi. The Buccaneers scored after launching yet another swift counterattack, this time capitalising on a numerical advantage.
The Pirates squandered several golden chances to double their lead in the dying minutes of the match. Oswin Appollis was also near goal when his attempt was disallowed due to offside.
The Buccaneers hung on for a crucial derby win despite missing opportunities to extend the lead. With these three points, they jumped to the top of the league, two points clear of Sundowns; Chiefs maintained their fifth place position, eleven points lagging behind the leaders. It was also the Chiefs' first loss in the league since Fernando da Cruz took over as coach.
After Saturday's 2-1 Soweto Derby win, Orlando Pirates players and a coach ate Kaizer Chiefs-branded chips at FNB Stadium to celebrate with the crowd. The group is seen laughing as they snack on packets of Grilled Steak, which is widely perceived as a playful jab at their competitors. After the victory, the Buccaneers climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership standings. Supporters reacted negatively to the playful celebration that included chips branded with Kaizer Chiefs, adding fuel to the fire of the already intense rivalry between the two powerhouses from Soweto.
Off the pitch as well as on it, the victory gave the Pirates plenty to celebrate. Winning against their fiercest opponents in front of a packed house is always an accomplishment, but Saturday's victory was especially sweet because it propelled them to the top of the league.
After displaying some promising play in the first half, Chiefs' loss will come as a huge disappointment. They need to get back on track and win more games, while Pirates try to hold on to first place in the Betway Premiership.
