Ouaddou Compares Pirates Players to Ferraris

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has provided an encouraging update on Oswin Appollis after the winger returned to training ahead of the club’s CAF Champions League second-leg encounter against African Stars.

Appollis’ return to training is a positive development for the Buccaneers, who are preparing for several important matches in the coming weeks. However, Ouaddou has made it clear that the club will not rush the South African international back into action before he is ready.

The Pirates coach explained that the training session was intended to assess Appollis’ condition and determine how well he was recovering. Particular attention was given to his movement during the warm-up, especially his ability to sprint without experiencing pain.

Ouaddou was pleased with the initial signs after the player reported that he was no longer feeling pain. However, the coach indicated that more consideration would be needed before making a final decision about his availability for upcoming matches.

“I’m happy that he was in training, the target was to see what he can do, in the warm-up to see if he can sprint, it’s good news, he said he doesn’t feel pain,” Ouaddou said.

Despite the positive update, the Moroccan mentor stressed that Appollis is an important player for Pirates and that his fitness must be carefully managed. He explained that the club cannot afford to take unnecessary risks with key players, particularly during a busy period of the season.

“But you must understand Oswin is an important player of the team, they are all Ferraris, we need to take care of the engines very well. I don’t want to risk any players ahead of these important games, or burn anything…” he added.

Ouaddou’s comparison of his players to Ferraris reflects his approach to managing the squad. He wants his players to perform at their best while ensuring that they are not rushed back before they have fully recovered.

Pirates have several important fixtures ahead, including their CAF Champions League assignment, the Soweto Derby and their Carling Knockout Cup clash against Milford FC next week.

Appollis’ return could provide a boost to the team, but his involvement will depend on how he responds to training and whether the technical team believes he is ready to compete.

For now, Pirates will continue to monitor his progress rather than take unnecessary risks. Although the winger’s return to training without pain is encouraging, the club's priority remains ensuring that he is fit enough to contribute when he returns to competitive action.
