Netstars seeks players and coaching support in Diepkloof

With 10 players on board, coach Godfrey Nyila is working to build the Netstars netball club and prepare for league competition.

From community courts to top school arenas, basketball’s rise across Africa reflects the growing influence of the National Basketball Association. With greater access, stronger development pathways and expanding youth participation, the game is building momentum both on and off the court.

Coach Godfrey Nyila is inviting young players to join the Netstars netball club as he builds a new team and develops local talent.

Nyila, an experienced coach based in Zone 3, Diepkloof, said he has 10 players training with him and intends to form a club with two divisions: U13 and U15.

Although he lacks a complete squad for either age group, he noted that some U13 players could temporarily play in the U15 division.

He is focusing on forming a team to compete in the local league. Training takes place at the Zone 1 Diepkloof tennis courts from Monday to Friday, between 15:45 and 17:00, and on Saturdays from 12:00 to 14:30.

Nyila said parents interested in enrolling their children can bring them to the courts, where he will explain how the club operates.

“There’s no payment, there’s no training fee. It’s just for free,” he said.

He also invited anyone interested in offering coaching services to join the club, regardless of their prior netball experience.
Nyila revealed that he previously ran a team for four years that participated in local tournaments.

These included the Lockdown tournament in Orlando West in 2021 and another in Protea Glen in 2023.

He said transport was one of the main challenges he faced while managing the team.

Parental support was also not always guaranteed, although some parents understood his vision.

Despite these challenges, Nyila remains determined to develop netball in the community. He plans to register the initiative as either an NPO or an NPC in the future.

He mentioned that he is considering ways to solve existing logistical problems and will consult others before making decisions.

For now, Nyila is focused on developing Netstars, recruiting new players, and preparing to compete in the league in 2027.

Parents who would like to enrol their children, as well as anyone able to assist with training, can contact him on 065 719 4190.
