Letsholonyane Discusses Kaizer Chiefs’ Prospects for the Season

Letsholonyane Sends Strong Message to Kaizer Chiefs Players as Pressure Mounts

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane believes Amakhosi have enough quality within their squad to compete for major honours this season, but insists that the players must take responsibility and deliver results on the pitch.

The former Bafana Bafana international, popularly known as Yeye, has shared his assessment of his former club following a challenging start to the campaign that has raised questions about the team's consistency and ability to compete at the highest level.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Letsholonyane acknowledged that he initially saw encouraging signs in the way Chiefs approached their matches. However, he believes the team must now find a way to turn those positive performances into victories if they want to meet the expectations of their supporters.

“When the league started, I remember saying that this was the most organised Chiefs that I’ve seen in a very long time,” Letsholonyane explained, highlighting the structure he observed in the team's defensive and attacking play.

Despite those encouraging early signs, injuries, changes in team combinations and disappointing results have made life difficult for the Soweto giants. Their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup against Zambian side Red Arrows added to the frustration surrounding the club.

Chiefs were knocked out after losing 3-2 on penalties, despite winning the second leg 1-0 to level the aggregate score. The setback intensified scrutiny of the team's progress under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

However, Letsholonyane believes the players should not allow the pressure surrounding the technical team to distract them from their own responsibilities.

According to the former midfielder, coaching provides direction and preparation, but it is ultimately the players who must execute the game plan and fight for positive results.

He stressed the importance of hard work, determination and greater commitment, arguing that the squad must demonstrate its quality when it matters most.

The former Amakhosi star also believes it would be premature to dismiss Chiefs from the Betway Premiership title conversation. With plenty of football still to be played, he feels a short run of victories could significantly change the narrative surrounding the club.

His comments come at a crucial stage of the season, with the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates providing Chiefs with an opportunity to restore confidence and demonstrate their ambitions.

Letsholonyane also challenged the suggestion that the championship race is already limited to Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, pointing to the potential of other competitive sides.

For Chiefs, the message is clear: the quality may be there, but performances and results must follow. The players now face the challenge of proving that Amakhosi can once again compete consistently for silverware.
