Panyaza Lesufi Leads Emotional Tributes To Former Birds Striker

South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Moroka Swallows striker Les Grobler, with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi among those paying tribute to the football figure who helped create memorable moments for the famous Dube Birds.

Lesufi, a well-known Moroka Swallows supporter and former president of the club, expressed his sadness following Grobler’s passing, sending condolences to the former striker’s family, friends and loved ones.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends. We will forever cherish the memories and spectacular moments when you wore the maroon and white shirt,” Lesufi wrote.

His message has added to the tributes pouring in from across the South African football community as supporters remember a player whose contribution to the domestic game stretched beyond his time at Swallows.

Grobler died on Monday, 26 October 2026, at the age of 64. His passing was reported after he had been hospitalised with a stomach complaint.

Grobler’s Special Place In Swallows History

Grobler represented Moroka Swallows during the late 1980s and early 1990s, establishing a reputation as a strong and dangerous forward.

He was particularly remembered for his aerial ability, physical presence and capacity to deliver important goals. His performances formed part of a successful period for the club, which enjoyed memorable cup triumphs during that era.

One of the highlights came in 1989, when Swallows defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 5-2 in a replay of the Bob Save Super Bowl final. Grobler scored the final goal of the match, adding his name to an occasion that remains part of the club’s history.

He was also involved when the Birds won the competition again in 1991, defeating Jomo Cosmos 2-1.

Before his time at Swallows, Grobler made his mark at Rangers, helping the Johannesburg club win the National Soccer League title in 1986.

More Than A Footballer

Grobler’s contribution to the game did not end when his playing career came to a close. He moved into coaching and development, working with Boksburg, Silver Stars and Highlands Park.

He also played a significant role in the football journey of his son, Bradley Grobler, the experienced Stellenbosch FC striker and former Bafana Bafana international.

Les began coaching Bradley when he was just three years old and continued guiding him until he signed his first professional contract at 19.

Bradley would go on to become one of the Premier Soccer League’s recognised goalscorers, surpassing the 100-goal milestone in top-flight football.

South African Football Remembers

The loss has been felt across the football fraternity, with former players, coaches, clubs and supporters reflecting on Grobler’s contribution.

Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt also expressed his condolences, recalling that he knew Les from their playing days and had faced him on numerous occasions.

For Swallows supporters, however, the memories of Grobler in the maroon and white shirt will remain especially meaningful.
