A former Orlando Pirates legend has weighed in on growing discussions about the possibility of moving the next Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs to Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, insisting that the safety of supporters must remain the biggest priority when deciding where the highly anticipated encounter should be played.
The proposal to stage the famous fixture outside Johannesburg has sparked debate among football supporters, with Moses Mabhida Stadium emerging as a possible alternative venue because of its experience hosting major football events.
Speaking about the suggestion, the former Pirates star pointed to the successful staging of the Nedbank Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium as evidence that the venue could accommodate supporters of both rival clubs.
He explained that there were initial fears of overcrowding and possible crowd disturbances ahead of that encounter, but the event ultimately took place without the anticipated problems.
"But the safety of the people come first. Remember the Nedbank Cup final between Pirates and Chiefs went to Moses Mabhida, we thought it was going to be a stampede and all of that but there was no such," he said.
His comments have added weight to the argument that Durban could provide a suitable alternative for future meetings between the Soweto giants, provided organisers introduce adequate security measures and effective crowd-management arrangements.
The Soweto Derby remains one of the biggest sporting events in South Africa, attracting enormous interest from supporters, sponsors and football stakeholders. However, the popularity of the fixture also creates logistical challenges, particularly concerning stadium capacity, ticket demand, transportation and supporter safety.
Moses Mabhida Stadium has considerable experience hosting major football occasions, having staged matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the memorable Nedbank Cup final involving Pirates and Chiefs.
Although no confirmed decision has been announced regarding the proposed venue change, the former Pirates legend believes supporters' welfare must come before every other consideration.
