Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns legend Benson Mhlongo has opened up about the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU)'s plans to establish a pension fund scheme for professional footballers in South Africa.
The proposed initiative is an important development for the country's football fraternity, particularly for players who often face financial uncertainty after bringing their professional careers to an end.
Football careers can be relatively short, with many players forced to adjust to life outside the game once they retire. While some manage to secure opportunities in coaching, football administration and other sectors, others struggle to maintain financial stability after leaving the professional game.
The proposed pension fund is therefore expected to provide players with a structured financial safety net, helping them prepare for retirement and secure their future beyond their playing days.
Mhlongo, who represented both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns during his playing career, has shared his perspective on the development as the football community considers the importance of protecting players' long-term interests.
The initiative could mark a significant step towards improving the welfare of professional footballers in South Africa, ensuring that their financial well-being receives attention even after they have stopped playing.
