South African football referee Luxolo Badi has sparked extensive discussion on social media after screenshots of purported old posts suggesting his connection to Orlando Pirates emerged online.

The situation has drawn attention from football fans, especially those worried about fairness in officiating, as doubts arise over whether the referee has previously shown support for one of the nation’s major clubs.

The widely circulated screenshots reportedly depict Badi expressing past support for Orlando Pirates. This has led to varying responses, with some fans questioning if his past affiliations could influence his officiating in matches involving the Soweto club.

Others have warned against making hasty judgments based solely on the screenshots, advocating for a thorough investigation into the claims before assessing the referee's professionalism.

The discussion gained momentum after the recent Soweto Derby, where Orlando Pirates triumphed over Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at FNB Stadium on October 31, 2026. Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz openly criticized the officiating, alleging that Pirates received favorable calls during the match.

Consequently, the controversy surrounding Badi reflects broader concerns about public trust in match officials and has put a spotlight on SAFA's refereeing leadership as fans seek clarity about the allegations and the professional standards expected from referees.

Nevertheless, mere social media postings do not prove that Badi has biased favor towards Orlando Pirates in official matches. His impartiality and professional behavior should be evaluated based on reliable evidence, rather than assumptions made from unverified social media content.

This situation underscores the increasing scrutiny referees face in South African football, especially when officiating high-stakes games involving teams with passionate fan bases.

Badi's alleged past support for Orlando Pirates has thus become a significant discussion point in South African football, with supporters seeking further insights from SAFA.
