Mamelodi Sundowns winger Tashreeq Matthews has made it clear that his team are determined to secure victory when they face Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16, with the Brazilians hoping to avoid another early exit against the same opponents.
The fixture carries added significance for Sundowns because Gallants eliminated them at this stage of last season’s competition. Matthews and his teammates will therefore have extra motivation to produce a stronger performance and keep their hopes of lifting the trophy alive.
“We play to win and that is important. Fortunately, we are getting Marumo Gallants again and we want to win the game.”
Matthews made it clear that Sundowns are not approaching the fixture as an opportunity for revenge. Instead, he believes the team must concentrate on winning, regardless of the opponent.
“I don’t think it’s revenge. We just have to go there. Whichever team we play against, we have to win,” he said. iDiski Times +1
The match comes at a difficult moment for Sundowns, who were recently eliminated from the CAF Champions League after drawing 1-1 with Angola’s Wiliete SC and going out on the away-goals rule. The setback ended their hopes of defending the continental title and increased the importance of their remaining domestic competitions. FARPost +1
Matthews believes the best way to move forward is to reflect on the disappointment, regain confidence and focus on the trophies still available. Sundowns have domestic silverware to pursue, and progressing in the Carling Knockout would provide an opportunity to restore momentum.
However, Marumo Gallants will be determined to repeat last season’s achievement. Their previous meeting in the competition ended goalless before Gallants won 7-6 on penalties, eliminating Sundowns and eventually reaching the final. SuperSport +1
The encounter therefore presents a significant challenge for both sides, with Sundowns seeking a response to their continental disappointment and Gallants aiming to prove they can trouble the Tshwane giants again.
