Beto Bianchi Applauds Wiliete SC's Defence Following Mamelodi Sundowns' Historic Elimination
After the Angolan team defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League to advance to the group stage for the first time in the club's history, Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi commended his players for their disciplined defensive effort.
Following a goalless first leg in Lubango, Wiliete advanced on the away-goals rule with a 1-1 draw against Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Friday nite. The South African giants, who were favourites going into the match, were severely damaged by the outcome.
Tashreeq Matthews gave Sundowns a strong start in the eleventh minute. But soon after halftime, Cristóvão "Mabululu" Paciqué equalised in the 48th minute by taking advantage of a defensive error by Cassius Mailula.
Sundowns failed to score again despite controlling possession and taking 18 shots to Wiliete's 6. Up until the last whistle, the visitors frustrated their opponents by staying organised at the back.
Bianchi expressed his satisfaction with his players' dedication, stating that they were aware of the defensive duties necessary against a seasoned team like Sundowns. He commended them for adhering to the strategy, enduring prolonged pressure, and seizing their chance in front of goal.
The coach also emphasised the importance of defeating Sundowns at home, characterising the accomplishment as a critical turning point for Wiliete and their goals for this season.
Sundowns, meanwhile, are facing challenging questions after their first CAF Champions League exit in eleven years. Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe allegedly expressed dissatisfaction and anticipated that coach Miguel Cardoso would succeed in the remaining tournaments, such as the CAF Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
However, Wiliete views the historic qualification as a significant accomplishment, rewarding a focused effort that put a stop to Sundowns' continental aspirations prior to the group stage.
