Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Hleza Mofedi stated that the Buccaneers are prioritizing tonight's Carling Knockout Last 16 match against Milford FC over Saturday's Soweto Derby.
Mofedi shared with KickOff that the club's primary goal is to win trophies and create history. "There is a Soweto Derby on Saturday, but our focus is on securing trophies," he explained. "Pirates can't hold back their best players for the derby; they always aim to make history. Therefore, tonight's match is crucial as they seek to advance in the Carling Knockout."
Pirates will face newly-promoted Milford at the Orlando Amstel Arena this evening. Milford has already made headlines this season by eliminating Kaizer Chiefs from the 2024 Nedbank Cup. Earlier in the season, Pirates defeated Milford 2-0 in the league, but Milford remains a well-disciplined and confident team under coach Dr. Xanti Pupuma.
Mofedi believes that the depth of the Pirates' squad gives them a significant advantage. “This Pirates team has players suited for league matches, players for the CAF Champions League, and players for domestic cups. They can effectively field three teams,” he remarked. He also noted that while Milford have been performing well, they are aware of the challenge they face tonight.
In recent years, Pirates have built a strong reputation as South Africa’s Cup Kings. They are the defending champions of the Carling Knockout and are also competing in the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League. With their position near the top of the league table, the club views progress in knockout competitions as part of their winning mentality rather than a distraction.
The Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs is scheduled for Saturday at FNB Stadium, and tickets for the match sold out rapidly. However, for Mofedi, the opportunity to make history demands immediate attention, making the Carling Knockout match the most significant fixture at this moment.
