Mokobodi Shines on Derby Debut as Orlando Pirates Midfielder Claims Man of the Match Award

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi has enjoyed a memorable introduction to the Soweto Derby after being named Man of the Match in his first appearance against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.

The 23-year-old delivered an impressive performance as the Buccaneers secured a crucial 2-1 victory over their bitter rivals in the Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium. His contribution proved decisive as Pirates claimed the bragging rights and moved to the top of the league standings.

Mokobodi entered the highly anticipated encounter with expectations surrounding his ability to handle the pressure of one of South African football's biggest fixtures. However, the midfielder demonstrated composure, quality and attacking intelligence throughout the match, rewarding his coach's confidence with an outstanding display.

The former Stellenbosch FC player played a significant role in both of Pirates' goals, providing assists for Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi as the Soweto giants secured all three points.

Pirates opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Mbuthuma capitalised on a pass from Mokobodi before finding the back of the net. Although Kaizer Chiefs restored parity through Pule Mmodi six minutes later, the Buccaneers maintained their determination to regain the advantage.

The decisive moment arrived in the 55th minute when Mokobodi produced another important contribution, setting up Moremi to score the winning goal.

His ability to influence the match in attacking areas highlighted the growing importance of his presence in the Pirates midfield. Rather than being overwhelmed by the intensity of the occasion, he appeared comfortable operating under pressure against a determined Chiefs side.

The Man of the Match recognition therefore represents a significant personal milestone for the midfielder, who has quickly established himself as an important figure since joining Pirates from Stellenbosch.

For head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Mokobodi's performance will be particularly encouraging as the defending champions continue their pursuit of domestic honours. His energy, movement and ability to create opportunities could prove valuable as the season progresses.

The victory also extended Pirates' impressive run of league results, with the team recording their seventh consecutive Premiership win. The three points lifted them to 25 points, two ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, although the Brazilians had an opportunity to respond later on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs were left disappointed after failing to secure a positive result despite showing determination throughout the encounter.

For Mokobodi, however, the derby will be remembered as a special occasion. Winning the Man of the Match award on his first appearance in the famous fixture, while directly contributing to both goals, represents an impressive achievement.

His performance has given Orlando Pirates supporters another reason to believe that the midfielder could play a crucial role in their ambitions for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign
