PSL Postpones League Matches as Carling Knockout Quarter-Finals Take Centre Stage

South African football supporters will have to wait a little longer for the return of Betway Premiership action after local government elections forced the postponement of league fixtures scheduled for this week.

With the league programme taking a break, attention will shift to the Carling Knockout Cup, which has reached the quarter-final stage.

According to The South African, the election-related postponements mean that only a limited number of top-flight teams will be involved in competitive action this week, with eight clubs preparing for their respective cup encounters.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has already confirmed that the seven league matches scheduled for Wednesday, 4 November, will not take place as planned because the day has been declared a public holiday for local government elections.

The affected fixtures include Kaizer Chiefs against AmaZulu, Siwelele FC versus Orlando Pirates, and Richards Bay against Stellenbosch FC.

Other postponed matches are Chippa United versus Sekhukhune United, Golden Arrows against Marumo Gallants, Polokwane City versus Kruger United and TS Galaxy against Durban City.

The league is expected to communicate new dates for the affected encounters.

Meanwhile, the Carling Knockout quarter-finals will provide the main attraction for supporters, with some of South Africa's biggest clubs still chasing silverware.

Mamelodi Sundowns are scheduled to face Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, 3 November, with kick-off set for 19:00.

The remaining quarter-final fixtures feature some interesting match-ups.

Kaizer Chiefs are set to host Siwelele FC at FNB Stadium, while Orlando Pirates will face Sekhukhune United.

Stellenbosch FC will also take on AmaZulu FC as the eight remaining clubs battle for places in the semi-finals.

The PSL has subsequently listed the three remaining quarter-final matches for Friday, 6 November, although venue and kick-off details were still awaiting confirmation on its fixture page.

For Pirates, the competition presents another opportunity to defend their Carling Knockout crown after winning the previous edition.

Chiefs, meanwhile, will be hoping to build on their recent 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy as they pursue another domestic trophy.

Sundowns will also be determined to add silverware to their collection following their disappointing CAF Champions League campaign.

With league football temporarily on hold, the Carling Knockout quarter-finals will offer supporters an opportunity to see which four teams move closer to lifting the trophy.

The postponed league fixtures will eventually have to be accommodated in an already busy domestic football calendar, adding another scheduling challenge for the PSL.
