Royale Union Saint-Gilloise midfielder Kamiel Van de Perre has revealed the club's ambitious target in the UEFA Europa League, making it clear that the Belgian side are aiming for more than simply progressing to the knockout stages.
The 22-year-old midfielder explained that Union SG are determined to finish among the top eight teams in the league phase, a position that would secure automatic qualification for the round of 16.
Speaking ahead of their European encounter against Spanish side Celta Vigo on Thursday, November 5, Van de Perre expressed confidence in his team's current performances and their ability to maintain their positive momentum.
Union SG have collected seven points from their opening three matches, remaining unbeaten in the competition. However, the midfielder believes they could have achieved a perfect record had it not been for his mistake during their 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad.
Reflecting on their position, Van de Perre said the team deserved its place among the leading clubs and insisted that their ambitions remained high.
He explained that the players want to win every remaining match rather than settle for their current position in the standings.
The Belgian midfielder also expects a competitive encounter against Celta Vigo, describing the Spanish outfit as a team with similar footballing qualities, particularly their preference for controlling possession.
Van de Perre believes supporters could witness an entertaining contest between two sides that enjoy playing attacking football and controlling the ball.
Despite suffering an injury around his eye during Union SG's previous league match against Beveren, the midfielder confirmed that he was fit and available for the European fixture.
He also spoke about his ambition to represent Belgium at senior international level, although he insisted that his immediate priority remains performing consistently for his club.
Union SG will now look to continue their impressive European campaign as they pursue a place among the competition's top eight.
