Nasreddine Nabi Determined to Restore Wydad's Glory
Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has made it clear that his ambitions at Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club extend far beyond winning domestic trophies, with the Tunisian tactician determined to rebuild a competitive squad capable of restoring the club's prestige.
Nabi has taken charge of Wydad following the club's decision to part ways with Portuguese coach Paulo Sérgio after a disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign. The experienced coach has been handed the responsibility of improving the team's performances and bringing renewed belief to a club whose supporters expect success.
Speaking about his vision, Nabi emphasised the importance of building a united team with a clear identity rather than focusing exclusively on immediate results.
"My ambition with Wydad is greater than simply winning a domestic title. My main project is based on building a strong and cohesive squad," Nabi explained.
The statement reflects the scale of the challenge facing the former Amakhosi mentor as he attempts to restore Wydad to its position among Morocco's leading clubs and strengthen its competitiveness on the continental stage.
Wydad endured a difficult opening to the league season, collecting only five points from their first four matches under Sérgio. Those results increased pressure on the technical team and eventually prompted the club's leadership to seek a change in direction.
Nabi's appointment represents an opportunity to establish a fresh approach, although the Tunisian understands that meaningful improvement will require more than a change in leadership.
The coach must improve the team's tactical organisation, build stronger relationships between players and identify the right combinations to deliver consistent performances. He will also need to manage the expectations of passionate supporters who want to see their team competing for major honours.
His familiarity with Moroccan football could prove valuable. Nabi previously coached AS FAR, guiding the Rabat-based club to second place in the league during the 2023/24 season, before his more recent spell at Raja Casablanca.
His experience in the country gives him an understanding of the pressure associated with coaching one of its biggest clubs.
For Wydad, the rebuilding process is about creating a team that can compete consistently rather than relying on isolated victories. A cohesive squad, disciplined performances and a clear playing philosophy will be central to Nabi's long-term vision.
The former Chiefs coach has a short-term contract running until the end of the current season, with an option to extend his stay.
That arrangement places immediate responsibility on him to demonstrate progress while laying the foundations for future success.
The early signs have been encouraging in terms of results. On 31 October, Wydad secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Moghreb Tétouan, although Nabi admitted afterwards that his team still needed to improve its overall performance. He stressed that finding the right balance and collecting points remain immediate priorities.
For South African football supporters, Nabi's latest project will attract particular interest because of his previous spell at Kaizer Chiefs. His departure from Naturena left questions about his tenure, but the Wydad opportunity gives him another platform to demonstrate his coaching ability.
Ultimately, Nabi's success will be measured not only by the trophies he wins but also by his ability to build a team that consistently performs at the highest level.
At Wydad, the mission is clear: restore confidence, establish a winning mentality and rebuild a squad capable of challenging for honours in Morocco and Africa.
