"It's Not Enough ": Ouaddou Shares Thierry Henry Story to Explain His Pirates Coaching Style

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained the thinking behind his demanding coaching style, revealing how former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry's childhood experiences influenced his approach to football.

The Moroccan tactician shared the story following Pirates' 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, where his animated behaviour on the touchline attracted attention. Ouaddou explained that his reactions were driven by his strong desire to win and his determination to get the best out of his players.

According to the Pirates coach, managing a big club comes with enormous responsibility because of the expectations and pressure that come with representing one of South Africa's biggest football institutions. Having spent 17 years as a professional footballer before moving into coaching, he understands the importance of discipline, hard work and maintaining high standards.

To explain his philosophy, Ouaddou referred to a story from Thierry Henry's autobiography. Henry, who attended the Soweto Derby as a special guest, reportedly spoke with the Pirates coach before the encounter.

Ouaddou recalled reading about Henry's childhood in Paris, where his father constantly challenged him to improve, regardless of how well he performed. Even when the young striker scored four or five goals in a match, his father would tell him that it was not enough and encourage him to do even better.

That lesson has influenced the way Ouaddou wants his players to approach their careers at Orlando Pirates.

He believes footballers should never become comfortable with their achievements but must continue working harder, improving their performances and pushing themselves towards greater success.

The coach also stressed that his demanding nature should not be mistaken for a lack of care. He sees himself as both a coach and an older brother who wants his players to reach their full potential.

Ouaddou believes that maintaining this mentality will help the Buccaneers remain competitive, improve their performances and achieve greater success in the future.
