Naturena targets Carling Knockout glory as Mako sends strong message ahead of Siwelele clash
Kaizer Chiefs defender Paseka Mako has made it clear that winning the 2026/27 Carling Knockout Cup is a major priority for the Soweto giants as they attempt to rescue their campaign after missing out on two opportunities to lift silverware.
The experienced left-back believes Amakhosi have an important opportunity to turn their season around by going all the way in the competition, although he insists that the immediate focus must remain on securing qualification for the semi-finals.
Chiefs are preparing for a crucial Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter against Siwelele FC, knowing that victory would take them one step closer to another domestic cup final.
The fixture carries additional significance for the Naturena-based outfit, considering their ambitions to challenge for trophies this season.
Having already experienced disappointment in two previous competitions, the Chiefs players understand the importance of making their remaining opportunities count.
Mako, who joined Amakhosi from Orlando Pirates, has emphasised that the dressing room remains determined to compete for the Carling Knockout trophy.
However, the defender is aware that looking too far ahead could become a distraction, particularly with a difficult quarter-final standing between them and a place in the last four.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Mako explained that the team's ambitions are clear but that their attention is firmly on overcoming Siwelele.
"We aim to win this trophy, but we're not getting ahead of ourselves, and all that is on our minds is to get through this quarterfinal," Mako stated.
His comments reflect the importance of maintaining concentration during the knockout stages, where one disappointing performance can bring a team's trophy ambitions to an abrupt end.
For Chiefs, the Carling Knockout represents another opportunity to deliver something special for their supporters, who have been waiting for consistent success on the domestic stage.
The technical team will also be aware that the pressure surrounding the club increases whenever expectations are not met.
Nevertheless, Siwelele will present a serious challenge. The Bloemfontein outfit will be determined to use the occasion to make a statement by eliminating one of South Africa's most recognisable football clubs.
Chiefs cannot afford to underestimate their opponents, especially in a competition where surprises are always possible.
Mako's experience could prove valuable as Amakhosi look to approach the encounter with the right mentality and defensive discipline.
The defender will also be hoping to contribute to a successful cup campaign after establishing himself within the squad.
Meanwhile, the upcoming Carling Knockout semi-final draw is scheduled to take place on Sunday after the Chiefs versus Siwelele quarter-final.
That means the Soweto giants could discover their potential semi-final opponents shortly after their own match.
For now, however, the message from Mako is straightforward: Chiefs want the trophy, but they must first earn their place in the semi-finals.
With their supporters desperate for silverware, the pressure is firmly on Amakhosi to turn their ambitions into results and give Naturena something to celebrate.
