Jomo Sono Makes Bold Soweto Derby Prediction as Pirates Face Chiefs

Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono has made a bold prediction ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026. His comments have added excitement to the build-up as the two South African football giants prepare to battle for bragging rights in the Betway Premiership.

Sono, widely regarded as one of the country's greatest football figures, has maintained a strong connection with Pirates throughout his career. His prediction has attracted attention from supporters eager to see whether the Buccaneers can continue their impressive form against their traditional rivals.

Pirates head into the encounter with considerable confidence after recording six consecutive league victories, scoring 16 goals during that impressive run. Their recent performances have strengthened expectations that they could secure another important result. The Buccaneers also recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup, providing further encouragement ahead of the derby.

However, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will understand that the Soweto Derby presents a different challenge. Despite their strong run, his players must remain focused and avoid underestimating a Chiefs side determined to make a statement.

Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, will be hoping to build on their own 3-0 Carling Knockout Cup victory over TS Galaxy. The result offered a timely confidence boost for Amakhosi, while striker Wandile Duba's goalscoring contribution provided additional encouragement.

Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz will be eager to see his players carry that momentum into the crucial encounter. A victory over Pirates would strengthen confidence among supporters and provide a significant boost to the team's league campaign.

The Soweto Derby remains one of South Africa's biggest football occasions, with history showing that recent form does not always determine the outcome.

As the two rivals prepare to meet, Sono's prediction has added another talking point. Ultimately, the players will decide the result when they take to the pitch at FNB Stadium.
