Former head coach of the University of Pretoria, Kwanele Kopo, has discussed his role in revitalizing Orlando Pirates forward Oswin Appollis' football career after the promising player contemplated leaving the sport altogether.
Since then, Appollis has emerged as one of South Africa’s dynamic players, gaining recognition at both club and national levels. However, his rise to success was marked by challenges, particularly after his time with SuperSport United came to an end.
Kopo was part of the coaching team that recognized Appollis while he was part of Ajax Cape Town's youth development. The coaches saw his potential and thought he could advance through SuperSport United’s academy to reach the senior squad.
Appollis was promoted to the first team, but his circumstances shifted with the arrival of new coaches who implemented a different style of play. Ultimately, he was released as he was deemed surplus to requirements.
After leaving SuperSport, Appollis faced difficulties in re-entering professional football. Kopo noted that Appollis was absent from the game for over 18 months before they reconnected at Pretoria Callies.
Persuading Appollis to come back was challenging, as he had lost motivation and was reluctant to consider another chance. Kopo reached out to him for weeks, even contacting his mother. He assured Appollis that if he returned to football and was unable to secure a professional contract within a season, he could return to Cape Town.
Kopo emphasized that the financial benefits at Pretoria Callies would be limited, stating that the primary goal was to help Appollis rebuild his career.
This decision proved pivotal, as Appollis regained his confidence and successfully made his way back into professional football.
Recently, Appollis explained why a potential transfer to FC Porto fell through last season. Though the Portuguese club expressed interest, the deal collapsed due to their failure to meet Orlando Pirates' asking price. Appollis stated that he is now focused on winning titles with Orlando Pirates while remaining open to future opportunities, hinting that he may receive offers from other European clubs.
Since joining Orlando Pirates, Appollis has showcased his skills through goals and assists, solidifying his role as a vital attacking player.
His performances have not only bolstered his standing with the Bafana Bafana national team but also included three assists in South Africa’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Appollis' journey underscores the critical impact of support and new opportunities for young footballers. Kopo's commitment to reintegrating Appollis into the sport enabled him to rediscover his potential and pursue his career aspirations.
As Pirates vie for major titles and Appollis draws attention for his form, he aims to keep up his performance, help the club achieve its goals, and maintain his European aspirations.
