Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why Bafana Bafana international Oswin Appollis has not enjoyed as much playing time this season, revealing that the club is deliberately managing the winger's workload to protect his fitness.

Appollis was one of the Buccaneers' standout attacking players last season, quickly establishing himself as an important member of the squad through his pace, creativity, dribbling ability and contributions in the final third. His performances made him a favourite among Pirates supporters, who have since raised questions about his reduced involvement in the current campaign.

However, Ouaddou has moved to reassure supporters that the situation does not reflect a loss of confidence in the talented winger. Instead, the Moroccan coach believes carefully managing the player's fitness will allow him to make a greater contribution throughout the season.

Speaking about Appollis' situation, Ouaddou described the attacker as a special asset whom the club must protect because of the demanding football calendar.

"We are protecting our diamond because we have many games and we know that if we protect him, we give him this time, we know that he will be important for us. We'll benefit from this protection we're giving him," Ouaddou explained.

Pirates are competing in several competitions this season, including the Betway Premiership, domestic cup tournaments and the CAF Champions League. The congested schedule means the technical team must carefully manage players to minimise fatigue and reduce the risk of injuries.

Appollis remains an important attacking option because of his ability to create scoring opportunities, take on defenders and influence matches with his individual quality.

Ouaddou's explanation should reassure Pirates supporters that the winger remains part of his plans. The coach is prioritising his long-term availability rather than exposing him to unnecessary physical demands.

The Buccaneers will hope the decision pays off as they continue their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts this season.
