Meeting with Walter Mokoena, the businessman spearheading the resuscitation of Moroka Swallows, will not be abandoned by the Dube Birds Steering Committee. In response to allegations that Mokoena is hesitant to meet with the group, Chairperson Thulani Mayekiso gave a stern response.
According to Swallows veteran Steve Sekano's recent interview with KickOff, Mokoena has no interest in meeting with the Steering Committee since he is unfamiliar with them. If Sekano is to be believed, Mokoena has taken it upon himself to restore the club after believing the committee was unsuccessful in its first mission.
Supporters of the new Moroka Swallows SC project were worried after hearing these remarks because they felt left out.The remarks made by Sekano did not surprise Mayekiso, according to him. He brought up the fact that Sekano had posed comparable concerns throughout his nearly two years on the committee.
"It's not original, and it doesn't sound strange coming from Steve," Mayekiso clarified. Since the committee had already heard those opinions, he went on to say that they were not disappointed by the comments. The Steering Committee chose to proceed with the strategy regardless of the reports. Directly contacting Mokoena was its secretary general. The response they got was brief but encouraging: "Hi Hlalele, received.
I am currently occupied with club commitments, but I will respond in due course." This communication, according to Mayekiso, sounded like someone who was willing to chat, which contradicted the earlier assertions that Mokoena had no interest in interacting with them.
The "Bring Back The Birds" initiative convened the Steering Committee around two years ago. Following years of financial difficulties and the loss of its top-flight status, the historic Soweto club's supporters and shareholders set out to rally support and seek funding.
The committee said it was uninvolved when Mokoena formed the Moroka Swallows SC and proclaimed its formation. Mayekiso is part of a small delegation that was later appointed to seek a meeting and learn about the club's plans and supporters' roles.
The need of maintaining a dialogue-based approach has been emphasised by Mayekiso. The committee is keeping up its attempts to participate in the discussion over the club's future while waiting for Mokoena to provide a more comprehensive response.
The Dube Birds' supporters are crossing their fingers that the two factions can resolve their differences and continue playing together.
