He Made A Massive Blunder— Junior Khanye Explodes After Kaizer Chiefs’ Painful Derby Loss To Pirates

Junior Khanye Questions Da Cruz's Big Selection Decision After Chiefs' Derby Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs have come under renewed scrutiny following their Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates, with former Amakhosi winger Junior Khanye questioning head coach Fernando Da Cruz's decision to start Inacio Miguel ahead of Rushwin Dortley.

The former Chiefs player believes Da Cruz made a tactical mistake with his defensive selection, particularly regarding Dortley's positioning. His criticism has added another layer to the debate surrounding the technical decisions made by the Amakhosi coach during one of South African football's biggest fixtures.

Khanye did not hide his disappointment with the decision, questioning why Dortley was not utilised in a role he believes would have better suited the defender's qualities.

"The Chiefs coach made a blunder. I don't understand why he's putting Dortley outside," Khanye said.

His comments have raised questions about whether Chiefs missed an opportunity to strengthen their defensive organisation against a dangerous Pirates attack.

The Soweto Derby is a fixture where even small tactical decisions can have significant consequences. With both teams desperate to secure bragging rights, coaches must carefully consider their starting line-ups, defensive combinations and the individual strengths of their players.

For Chiefs, the choice between Miguel and Dortley has become a talking point, especially after the disappointing result against their bitter rivals.

Khanye's argument centres on continuity. Dortley had recently returned to the starting line-up against TS Galaxy, helping Chiefs record a convincing 3-0 victory in the Carling Knockout Cup. His performance provided the coaching staff with a reason to consider retaining the defensive combination for the derby.

Speaking on iDiski TV, Khanye argued that Da Cruz should have trusted the defensive partnership that had performed well against Galaxy rather than introducing Miguel for the high-pressure encounter against Pirates.

He questioned the logic behind changing a defence that had just delivered a solid performance, suggesting that consistency should have played a major role in the coach's selection.

Khanye also criticised Miguel's defensive approach, arguing that the experienced centre-back's timing and positioning were questionable.

The defender's dismissal late in the derby further intensified the scrutiny surrounding his selection. Miguel received a second yellow card in stoppage time, leaving Chiefs with another concern following an already disappointing afternoon.

However, it would be unfair to attribute the entire defeat to one selection decision. Chiefs created opportunities but failed to convert enough of them, while Pirates capitalised on their chances to secure an important victory.

The 2-1 defeat was particularly painful for Amakhosi because it represented their first loss in the Betway Premiership this season. Pule Mmodi scored Chiefs' equaliser after Yanela Mbuthuma had given Pirates the lead, but Tshepang Moremi's second-half goal ultimately settled the contest.

For Da Cruz, the challenge now is to assess what went wrong and ensure that his team responds positively in its upcoming fixtures.

Dortley's return provides the coach with another defensive option, although the defender's lengthy injury absence means his recovery and match fitness must also be managed carefully.

Khanye's criticism has nevertheless placed an important question before the Chiefs technical team: should a successful defensive partnership be changed so quickly after delivering a clean sheet?

Amakhosi supporters will be hoping the coaching staff finds the right answers as the club looks to recover from the derby setback and revive its campaign.

One thing is certain: Da Cruz's next defensive selection will attract considerable attention, especially if Dortley is given another opportunity to prove that Khanye's concerns deserve serious consideration.
