Not only could Inacio Miguel miss Kaizer Chiefs' upcoming matches due to his latest disciplinary setback, but his position on the team and chances of getting a new contract could also be jeopardised.
With two yellow cards under his belt, the Angolan defender was shown the exit door in Saturday's Soweto Derby match against Orlando Pirates. He was sent off in the waning moments of the Chiefs' 2-1 loss at FNB Stadium.
Due to his dismissal, Miguel will likely sit out the club's next two games, which presents Fernando Da Cruz with yet another dilemma when it comes to making defensive lineup decisions. Because of his disciplinary history, his return may also face more scrutiny.
The 30-year-old had a yellow card history going into the derby, having picked up yellows in previous matches against Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Siwelele FC. His long history of disciplinary issues at Naturena is further exacerbated by the two cautions against Pirates.
Shortly after joining Chiefs from Petro de Luanda in July 2024, Miguel started having problems with bookings. Both his accumulation of four yellow cards and his red card against Sundowns in the Carling Knockout led to his suspension in his first six games.
Last season, the issue resurfaced, despite a temporary improvement in his disciplinary record. In home competitions, he received ten yellow cards, which led to two more suspensions.
That he can maintain a constant level of availability has been raised again by his most recent dismissal. With each suspension, the Chiefs lose a seasoned defensive player and give other players a chance to prove themselves worthy of his starting role.
Now that Rushwin Dortley is available again, things could get trickier. Even though Miguel started in Dortley's place for the derby, Da Cruz now has another central defender to choose from thanks to his availability.
What this means for Miguel's future with the club is anybody's guess. At the end of June, his current three-year contract will come to an end. He signed it when he arrived from Petro de Luanda in July 2024. Reports indicate that his representatives have been requesting more time.
But the most recent disciplinary setback might make those talks more difficult, especially if additional sanctions from the club are being considered. Neither the decision on his contract nor any additional punishment have been officially announced.
In the meanwhile, Miguel must serve out his suspension and prove to the Chiefs that he will not let his disciplinary issues derail his performance.
