Naturena Graduate Aden McCarthy Explains Why He Chose European Football Over Chiefs
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has opened up about his decision to leave Naturena for European football, explaining why he believed moving abroad was the right step for his career after establishing himself in the Amakhosi senior team.
The 22-year-old centre-back completed his transfer to Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FK in June 2026 following an impressive breakthrough campaign with the Soweto giants.
McCarthy's departure attracted attention among Chiefs supporters, particularly because he had spent years progressing through the club's development structures before finally earning an opportunity in the senior team.
However, rather than viewing his departure as an indication of dissatisfaction with Amakhosi, the defender has explained that the opportunity represented an important investment in his personal and professional development.
In explaining his decision, McCarthy highlighted the importance of taking opportunities that could help him develop as a footballer and experience different environments.
The move to Azerbaijan offered him an opportunity to test himself outside South African football, compete against unfamiliar opposition and gain valuable experience at a higher international level.
His decision also followed an earlier unsuccessful opportunity to secure a move to Moldovan club FC Sheriff Tiraspol.
That setback did not end his European ambitions, as Sabah eventually provided the breakthrough he had been looking for.
The defender's transfer was officially confirmed by both clubs in June, with Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr expressing pride in seeing the academy graduate take the next step in his career.
McCarthy's progress since arriving in Azerbaijan has been encouraging.
The young defender became part of Sabah's historic UEFA Champions League campaign, gaining valuable experience against established European opposition.
One of his biggest moments came when he scored his first goal for the club against German giants Borussia Dortmund, despite Sabah suffering a 2-1 defeat.
He had also experienced the demanding atmosphere of Old Trafford when Sabah faced Manchester United earlier in the competition.
Those appearances have provided the South African with an opportunity to demonstrate his defensive qualities on a much bigger stage.
His performances have not gone unnoticed back home either. Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane included him in the preliminary squad for the November 2026 double-header against Kenya.
For McCarthy, leaving Kaizer Chiefs was about embracing an opportunity to grow rather than simply moving away from South African football.
His journey also demonstrates the importance of patience, determination and making difficult career decisions at the right time.
Having progressed through Naturena's development ranks, he now has the opportunity to establish himself in European football while representing South Africa internationally.
Chiefs supporters will undoubtedly continue following his progress, particularly as the young defender gains experience against some of Europe's biggest teams.
His departure may have surprised many Amakhosi fans, but his early experiences in Azerbaijan suggest that the decision has opened an important new chapter in his football journey.
