Kaizer Chiefs have officially announced the signing of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana, providing a significant boost to their attacking options as they continue strengthening their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The 27-year-old winger returns to South African football as a free agent after spending the last two seasons playing abroad, where he gained experience in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.
Amakhosi confirmed the signing on Wednesday, November 4, through their official communication channels, ending speculation about the former Sekhukhune United attacker's next destination.
Mokwana had been strongly linked with a return to Naturena following his departure from Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis in September. Reports suggested that the Soweto club had already reached an agreement on personal terms with the player before finalising the move.
His arrival will be an important addition for head coach Fernando Da Cruz, who has been looking to improve his team's attacking quality by bringing in more speed, creativity and unpredictability in the final third.
Mokwana initially attracted attention through his impressive performances at Sekhukhune United, where he established himself as one of the exciting attacking players in the Premier Soccer League.
His performances eventually earned him a move to Espérance Sportive de Tunis in August 2024, giving him an opportunity to continue his career outside South Africa.
During his time with the Tunisian giants, Mokwana enjoyed considerable success, helping the club secure the domestic league and cup double during the 2024/25 season.
He also won the Tunisian Super Cup and gained valuable international club experience by participating in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The winger continued his career in the Middle East during the 2025/26 campaign after joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem on loan. He made 24 appearances in the Saudi Pro League, further adding to his experience of playing in different football environments.
His return is expected to provide Chiefs with an experienced attacking option, particularly given his exposure to international competitions and different styles of football outside South Africa.
According to a report published by Sports With Daily News on October 31, Mokwana agreed to a three-year contract with Kaizer Chiefs.
However, Amakhosi have not officially revealed the duration of his contract or disclosed details regarding his signing-on fee and monthly salary. No confirmed financial figures have been made public, meaning supporters should treat any reported salary information that has not been verified with caution.
What has been confirmed is that Chiefs secured his signature as a free agent, meaning they were not required to pay a transfer fee to Espérance Sportive de Tunis to complete the move.
Mokwana is recognised for his pace, ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations and direct attacking approach. His versatility also allows him to operate on either wing, giving Da Cruz greater flexibility when selecting his attacking lineup.
At international level, the winger has earned 11 senior caps for Bafana Bafana since making his debut against Andorra in March 2024. He was also included in South Africa's squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
For Kaizer Chiefs, securing Mokwana's services represents an important step in strengthening their attacking department as they look to improve their performances following an inconsistent beginning to the season.
His arrival also comes shortly after Amakhosi suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby, making the signing an encouraging development for supporters hoping to see the team become more competitive in the coming weeks.
