Pitso Mosimane has confirmed his final 27-man Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming double-header against Kenya in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with 12 players from his initial preliminary selection failing to make the final cut.
The Bafana coach initially announced a provisional 38-man squad as preparations began for the two important Group D encounters. However, after assessing his available options, Mosimane has reduced the selection to 27 players who will represent South Africa during the November international break.
Among the notable omissions are experienced midfielder Themba Zwane, Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe. Zwane's exclusion is particularly significant given his experience and contributions to South African football over the years. The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has previously played an important role in the national team, but he will not be part of the upcoming fixtures.
Other players who missed out include Thakasani Mbanjwa, Nkosikhona Radebe, Khulumani Ndamane, Aden McCarthy, Luke Le Roux, Devin Titus, Nqaba Xulu and Boitumelo Radiopane.
Thapelo Maseko is another major absentee. The winger, who represented Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and scored an important goal during the tournament, has been ruled out of selection because of a recent injury.
Meanwhile, Siyanda Ndlovu has secured a place in the final squad despite not featuring in the original 38-man preliminary selection.
South Africa enter the upcoming matches in strong form after winning their opening two AFCON qualifying fixtures. They defeated Guinea 2-1 before producing an impressive 5-0 victory over Eritrea, collecting six points to lead Group D.
However, the qualification campaign presents an unusual challenge because Kenya are among the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON. Consequently, only one team from Group D will qualify for the competition.
Bafana will host Kenya at Orlando Amstel Arena on 13 November before travelling for the return encounter on 17 November.
Mosimane will be hoping his selected players deliver positive results in both matches to strengthen South Africa's position and maintain their ambitions of reaching the 2027 AFCON tournament.
