The possibility of hosting the next Soweto Derby at Moses Mabhida Stadium has sparked discussions among football supporters, with a former Orlando Pirates legend weighing in on the proposal.
The suggestion has attracted attention because of the enormous following enjoyed by both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The Soweto Derby is one of South Africa's biggest football fixtures, regularly drawing massive crowds and generating intense excitement among supporters of the two rivals.
Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban has emerged as a possible alternative venue for the highly anticipated encounter. However, concerns about crowd management, security and the possibility of disorder have raised questions about whether the stadium would be suitable for such a high-profile match.
A former Pirates legend has pointed to the previous Nedbank Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs as an example of how the fixture can be successfully organised outside Johannesburg.
He recalled that the two clubs previously met in the Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium, despite fears that the occasion could result in serious crowd-related problems.
“Remember the Nedbank Cup final between Pirates and Chiefs went to Moses Mabhida, we thought it was going to be a stampede and all of that but there was no such.”
His comments suggest that the stadium has already demonstrated its ability to accommodate supporters of both clubs during an important football occasion.
The former Pirates figure's argument is that previous experience should be considered when discussing the possibility of moving the Soweto Derby to Durban. Rather than assuming that such an arrangement would automatically create security challenges, organisers could draw lessons from the successful staging of the previous final.
Hosting the derby at Moses Mabhida could also provide football supporters outside Johannesburg with an opportunity to experience one of the country's most anticipated sporting events.
Nevertheless, any decision to relocate the fixture would require careful consideration from the relevant football authorities, particularly regarding security arrangements, transportation, ticketing and crowd control.
For now, the possibility remains a subject of discussion, but the former Pirates legend's comments have added another perspective to the debate over where the next Soweto Derby should take place.
