Peter Shalulile has made an impressive start to life at Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga), with his early performances bringing back memories of Fiston Mayele's successful spell at the club.
The Namibian striker has scored six goals in nine Mainland Tanzania Premier League appearances since joining Yanga. His overall tally stands at six goals in 10 matches across all competitions, placing him among the leading scorers in the league.
His performances have attracted attention because Mayele previously set a remarkable standard during his time with the Tanzanian side. The Congolese forward scored 17 league goals in 17 appearances during the 2021/22 campaign before recording 18 goals in just 13 appearances the following season.
Mayele's goalscoring ability made him one of Yanga's most influential attacking players and helped the club maintain its position among Tanzania's leading teams.
Shalulile, however, appears to be settling into his new environment quickly. Unlike some previous Yanga forwards who needed time to adjust, the experienced striker has delivered goals from the early stages of his spell.
His background at Mamelodi Sundowns also adds to expectations. He scored 136 goals across all competitions for the South African club and won several major honours during his time there.
Although Shalulile's early numbers are encouraging, matching Mayele's achievements over a full season will require sustained performances. Mayele's record remains a difficult standard to surpass, particularly given his contribution in domestic and continental competitions.
For now, Yanga supporters have reasons to be pleased with their new striker's impact as he continues his effort to establish himself as one of the club's leading goalscorers.
