Misplaced Passion or Costly Recklessness? Inacio Miguel's Red Cards Raise Fresh Concerns at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel is once again facing questions about his temperament after receiving another red card in one of the club’s biggest fixtures of the season. The Angolan international’s dismissal during Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates has reopened an uncomfortable discussion about whether his aggressive approach is helping Amakhosi or repeatedly putting the team in difficult situations.

Miguel was sent off in stoppage time as Chiefs suffered a 2-1 defeat against their bitter rivals on 31 October 2026. The defender received his first yellow card in the 81st minute before picking up a second booking in the 91st minute. His departure left Fernando da Cruz’s team with ten players during the closing stages of an already disappointing afternoon.

The timing of the dismissal makes the incident particularly frustrating for Chiefs supporters. The Soweto Derby is never an ordinary league fixture, and the consequences of losing against Pirates extend beyond the three points. It is also about bragging rights, confidence and the expectations of a demanding fanbase.

Miguel’s dismissal was not the only reason Chiefs lost the encounter, as Pirates had already established their advantage through goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi. Pule Mmodi scored for Amakhosi, but the equaliser was not enough to prevent their rivals from securing maximum points.

Nevertheless, the defender’s disciplinary problems have become difficult to ignore. This is not the first time he has received a red card in a major fixture involving Chiefs. During the 2024 Carling Knockout quarter-final against Mamelodi Sundowns, Miguel was also dismissed after receiving two yellow cards. Chiefs eventually suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat in that encounter.

That history makes the latest incident particularly concerning. Miguel joined Amakhosi from Angolan giants Petro de Luanda in August 2024 on a three-year contract. He arrived with considerable experience, having competed in continental football and won domestic honours in Angola. His signing was viewed as an opportunity to strengthen a Chiefs defence that needed greater authority and experience.

There is no denying that Miguel brings aggression, physicality and commitment to the defensive department. These qualities are important for a centre-back, particularly when facing dangerous opposition attackers. However, there is a significant difference between playing with intensity and allowing emotions to influence decision-making.

Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth also questioned Miguel’s judgement following the Soweto Derby. During SuperSport TV’s ExtraTime analysis, Booth acknowledged that the first yellow card was somewhat harsh but believed the second booking was unnecessary, especially considering that the defender already knew he was on a caution.

That assessment highlights the real problem. Experienced defenders must understand when to make a challenge and when to protect their team by avoiding unnecessary risks. A player can be aggressive without constantly placing himself in situations where another booking becomes a possibility.

The consequences are also beginning to affect Da Cruz’s selection decisions. Miguel’s suspension creates an opportunity for other defenders, including Rushwin Dortley, Thabo Moloisane and Zitha Kwinika, to take greater responsibility. Competition for places is healthy, but losing an experienced centre-back through avoidable disciplinary incidents is not ideal for a team trying to establish consistency.

For Chiefs supporters, the bigger question is whether Miguel can learn from these experiences. His commitment should never be questioned simply because he plays an aggressive style of football. However, passion must be accompanied by discipline, particularly when representing a club with the expectations and history of Kaizer Chiefs.

Ultimately, Miguel remains a valuable defensive option, but his latest dismissal has made one thing clear: Amakhosi need their experienced players available when the biggest matches arrive. If he cannot find the balance between aggression and composure, his passion could continue costing the team at crucial moments.

The challenge now is not to take the aggression out of Miguel’s game, but to make sure he knows when to control it.
