Chiefs Recalls Former Defender as Club Changes Transfer Plans

Kaizer Chiefs defender Xolani Cossa is expected to return to Naturena for the 2026/27 season after the Soweto giants reportedly made it clear that they want him back following his loan spell at Botswana Premiership side Black Lions.

The development comes after Black Lions expressed their desire to extend Cossa's stay at the club, having been impressed by his performances during his time in Botswana. However, their hopes of retaining the promising defender have been complicated by Kaizer Chiefs' decision to recall him ahead of the new campaign.

Cossa's loan spell provided him with an important opportunity to gain regular first-team experience and develop his abilities against senior opposition. Rather than spending most of his time on the sidelines at Naturena, the defender was able to enjoy valuable playing opportunities and continue his development.

Black Lions reportedly recognised the contribution he made to their team and were interested in keeping him for another spell. However, the club acknowledged that Chiefs wanted the player back, suggesting that Amakhosi have plans for him as they prepare for the upcoming season.

For Kaizer Chiefs, bringing Cossa back could provide an additional option in defence without necessarily having to spend money on another signing. The club has been working towards strengthening its squad, and assessing young players who have gained experience elsewhere could form part of that process.

Nevertheless, returning to Naturena does not automatically guarantee Cossa a regular place in the starting lineup. He will face competition from established defenders and will need to convince the technical team during pre-season training and friendly matches.

His experience in Botswana could prove valuable as he attempts to make the transition into the Chiefs first team.

Amakhosi supporters will now be interested to see whether Cossa can turn this opportunity into a breakthrough season. Black Lions may have wanted to retain him, but Chiefs' reported decision to recall the defender suggests they are keen to assess his potential as part of their plans for 2026/27.
