Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has questioned the decision to disallow Oswin Appollis' goal following his team's latest encounter, insisting that the controversial incident should also be considered when discussing the chances his players failed to convert.
The Buccaneers created several scoring opportunities during the match but struggled to make the most of them, raising questions about their finishing and ability to turn attacking pressure into goals. However, Ouaddou believes the discussion surrounding their missed chances should not overlook the goal that was ruled out by the match officials.
Appollis appeared to have found the back of the net, but his effort was disallowed after the officials judged that the Orlando Pirates attacker had committed an offside offence. The decision attracted attention and became one of the major talking points following the encounter.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Ouaddou suggested that he was not entirely convinced Appollis had been in an offside position. Nevertheless, the Moroccan tactician admitted that he needed to examine the available footage before making a definitive assessment of the incident.
"I think if we have to speak about the chances that we missed, we have to speak about the goal that we scored. I have to check, but I'm not sure it's offside," Ouaddou told journalists.
His comments indicate that he wants a balanced assessment of Pirates' attacking performance rather than allowing the conversation to focus exclusively on their failure to convert clear opportunities.
Despite the frustration surrounding the disallowed goal, Pirates still have work to do in improving their efficiency in front of goal. Creating opportunities is an important part of their attacking approach, but converting those chances remains essential when competing against difficult opponents.
Ouaddou will therefore expect his attacking players to maintain their confidence while becoming more clinical in future matches. Meanwhile, the Appollis incident could remain a talking point as supporters continue to question the officials' decision.
