Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has opened up about the mentality behind his emotional touchline reactions, insisting that his demanding approach is driven by a strong desire to achieve excellence and bring success to the Soweto giants.
The Moroccan tactician attracted considerable attention during Saturday's Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, where his animated reactions highlighted the intensity and expectations surrounding one of South African football's biggest fixtures. Pirates eventually secured a memorable 2-1 victory, strengthening their position in the Betway Premiership title race.
Speaking after the match, Ouaddou explained that coaching at a club with the history and reputation of Orlando Pirates comes with enormous responsibilities. Having spent 17 years as a professional footballer, he understands the standards required to compete at the highest level.
"It's not easy to do this job. When you played for 17 years and then decide to become a coach, especially at a big club like Pirates, you want the best for your team and your club. I am driven by excellence," he said.
Ouaddou revealed that he wants his players to maintain a continuous desire to improve, regardless of their individual performances or the team's results.
To explain his philosophy, he referenced former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry, whose father reportedly continued demanding more from him even after scoring four or five goals in youth matches.
The Pirates coach believes this mentality encourages players never to become comfortable with their achievements.
He also described himself as someone who considers his players like younger brothers, explaining that his responsibility goes beyond tactical instructions. However, he acknowledged that his emotional reactions can affect players differently, with some using his passion as motivation while others may initially feel uncomfortable.
Ouaddou also admitted that his tactical decisions were not particularly effective during the first half against Chiefs, but his adjustments after the interval helped Pirates turn the encounter in their favour.
Following their disappointment in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, the derby victory provided an important boost. Ouaddou now wants his players to maintain their hunger for improvement as Pirates pursue major honours this season.
