Orlando Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has come out in support of Oswin Appollis following concerns over the winger's reduced playing time at the Soweto-based club.
Appollis, who is currently in his third season with the Buccaneers, has recently spent more time on the substitutes' bench. His situation has raised questions among supporters, particularly those who believe he deserves more opportunities in Abdeslam Ouaddou's starting line-up.
However, Vilakazi believes the winger should not be judged by his recent lack of appearances, insisting that his quality remains unquestionable.
Speaking on the Omni Audio podcast, the former Pirates midfielder suggested that confidence could be affecting Appollis' performances. He also hinted that there might be issues involving the player, coaching staff or club management that could explain his situation.
“Let me say something that will make everyone think and talk – you can’t bring a good man down,” Vilakazi said.
He questioned how Appollis could suddenly become an ineffective player despite previously demonstrating his abilities whenever given an opportunity.
“Something might have happened between him and the coach or maybe the management. But we want to see him on the field because every time he plays, he gives us the class we know he possesses,” Vilakazi explained.
The Pirates legend also recalled the recent Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, revealing that he expected Appollis to feature in the encounter. He believes the winger could have made a difference, even if he had been introduced as a substitute.
Vilakazi acknowledged that Ouaddou might have had tactical reasons for keeping Appollis on the bench, as coaches sometimes need to manage their squads and make decisions based on the team's overall balance.
He further highlighted Appollis' importance to South African football, pointing out that he is also a member of the Bafana Bafana national team.
“He is a key man and we need to show respect. He is a Bafana Bafana player and is key there as well,” he added.
Vilakazi also referred to the criticism Appollis faced after the World Cup, when questions were raised about his performances and Hugo Broos' decision to include him in the national team.
According to the former midfielder, negative comments can affect a player's confidence, making it important for the coaching staff to provide the necessary support while helping him understand his responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Appollis will be hoping to regain his place in the Orlando Pirates starting line-up as the club continues its campaign under Ouaddou.
Although competition for places remains strong, the winger still has an opportunity to prove himself whenever he gets playing time.
Vilakazi's message is that Appollis has not lost his footballing ability and should not be written off because of his current situation.
The big question among Pirates supporters is whether Appollis can win back his starting position or whether Ouaddou will continue managing his appearances from the bench.
