Miracle Ebubechi Michael, also known by her aliases "Anoda Mirakle" and "Mimi," is a huge Orlando Pirates supporter from Nigeria. She recently spoke about her wonderful time in South Africa at the sold-out Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.
"South Africa is a beautiful place," Michael said, reflecting on her stay and dispelling internet myths about local animosity. We observe the exact reverse as it pertains to South Africans than what we see online. The digital narratives and social media rhetoric that continue about online bigotry and national divide are challenged by her words. She drew attention to the fact that, in contrast to the bad online clichés, her encounters with regular South Africans were marked by kindness, hospitality, and fraternity.
Supporters of South African football teams Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mamelodi Sundowns came together in a public crowdfunding drive to earn more than R40,000, which allowed Michael to go to Johannesburg. In addition to housing her, local host organisations and fans planned cultural trips that included stops at the Premier Soccer League headquarters and Soweto's Vilakazi Street.
Thousands of local supporters cheered Michael on as she participated in her maiden Soweto Derby, and she utilised the event to promote African unity and sports diplomacy. In spite of political tensions and a lack of mutual respect on both sides of the African continent, she said, sport has the ability to bring Nigeria and South Africa closer together. Her tale and the warm responses it garnered were widely shared on social media and TV channels, making her a heralded symbol of unity and ubuntu beyond borders.
