Bafana Defender McCarthy Sees Sabah FK Lose in Azerbaijan

Aden McCarthy Involved as Sabah FK Suffer First League Defeat of the Season

Bafana Bafana defender Aden McCarthy experienced a disappointing afternoon in Azerbaijan as Sabah FK suffered their first defeat of the 2026/27 Misli Premier League campaign after losing 3-2 to Turan Tovuz on Friday.

The South African defender started the encounter on the bench before being introduced at the beginning of the second half, with Sabah already facing an uphill battle after conceding twice before the interval.

The defeat brought an end to Sabah's five-match unbeaten run in the league, marking a significant setback for the reigning champions, who had enjoyed an encouraging start to their domestic campaign.

Turan Tovuz made their intentions clear from the opening stages, putting the visitors under pressure and eventually taking the lead through Henrique Silva in the 27th minute.

The home side quickly increased their advantage when Jô Batista found the back of the net in the 30th minute, leaving Sabah with a difficult task heading into the second half.

Following the interval, McCarthy was introduced as Sabah looked to strengthen their defensive organisation and find a way back into the contest.

However, Turan Tovuz continued to cause problems and extended their lead to 3-0 through Batista, who completed his brace in the 67th minute.

Despite the difficult situation, Sabah refused to give up. Joy Lance Mickels pulled one goal back in the 70th minute before Xander Severina scored again in the 87th minute to make it 3-2.

The visitors pushed for a late equaliser, but Turan Tovuz managed to protect their advantage and secure an important home victory.

For McCarthy, the appearance represents another opportunity to gain valuable experience in Azerbaijani football as he continues his development abroad.

The former Kaizer Chiefs academy product has been working to establish himself at Sabah since making the move from South Africa, with his performances attracting attention from Bafana Bafana supporters.

Despite the defeat, Sabah remain at the top of the league standings with 20 points, although Qarabağ FK have an opportunity to overtake them with a victory in their outstanding fixture.

The result leaves Sabah with plenty to consider as they prepare for their next assignment. Their immediate challenge will be responding positively and ensuring that one disappointing afternoon does not affect their overall momentum.

McCarthy and his teammates will now be hoping to return to winning ways as the Azerbaijani league campaign continues.
