Mokobodi, who joined from Stellenbosch during the off-season, where he mainly played as a right-back, has adapted effortlessly into the Sea Robbers’ squad.
The midfielder was a consistent threat to Chiefs at the packed FNB Stadium, contributing the key moment by assisting Tshepang Moremi for the winning goal in Pirates’ 2-1 triumph. Demonstrating excellent movement, Mokobodi made his run perfectly, leaving the Chiefs defense outpaced, and delivered an accurate cross for Moremi to finish into an open net.
For Ouaddou, Mokobodi’s success holds personal significance, recalling their previous association at Marumo Gallants when the player was sidelined.
“Mokobodi, I know from Marumo Gallants,” noted Ouaddou.
“When I arrived in January/February 2025, Marumo was at the bottom of the league. They had 40 players, and some were training separately. Mokobodi was in the other group.
“I organized a friendly match for those players who were overlooked and was amazed by the quality I saw; I couldn’t believe he was sidelined.
“I’m thrilled that he was brought to Pirates; I knew he would contribute significantly. He is a box-to-box player with the ability to cover distances and is intelligent on the pitch.
“He anticipates plays before receiving the ball; he can score, assist, and win back possession. Most importantly, he is a true professional with strong personal values. He respects his teammates and the club.
“I foresee a bright future for him. He is undoubtedly among the top midfielders in the country.”
The derby victory temporarily placed Pirates atop the Betway Premiership table with 25 points from nine matches.
Mamelodi Sundowns later reclaimed the lead with a 4-1 win over Durban City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium, edging ahead by a single point, although Pirates still have a game in hand.
