The Sharks delivered a remarkable display at Thomond Park on Saturday, achieving a historic 15-3 victory, marking their first win at the iconic Limerick venue in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship.
The victory was built on steadfast defense, physicality, and a commendable team effort that illustrated the increasing confidence and cohesion within the squad.
Key to the win were two tries scored by Gianni Lombard, who ended the match with 10 points, along with Ivan Van Zyl adding to the scoreboard. The Sharks managed to prevent Munster from scoring a try throughout the match.
Even after facing a yellow card with Ox Nche, the Sharks maintained their composure and discipline, making sure the hosts never returned to contention. Their defensive dedication limited Munster to only a single penalty, culminating in an impressive 15-3 victory.
“It’s a special game for us tonight. Winning here for the first time is a testament to the physical effort from the boys,” Pietersen remarked.
He expressed satisfaction with the team’s defensive performance and the unwavering attitude shown throughout the match.
“We displayed relentless energy today, and our defensive effort means so much. We didn’t allow them a single try, showing what we’ve been creating as a team. We care deeply for one another, and it’s uplifting to witness that in our actions, not merely in our words,” he stated.
“We fight for one another, and that’s truly gratifying to see.”
Pietersen also pointed out the significance of the bonds being forged within the squad, with a blend of experienced players and younger talents cultivating strong relationships both on and off the pitch.
“There is a wonderful mix of both old and young players, sharing enjoyable moments and truly making time to connect.”
A standout performer was 19-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya, whose exceptional effort earned him the Man of the Match title. Pietersen was quick to commend the young talent while also acknowledging the forward pack for providing the platform for his effective play.
“Zekhethelo delivered a performance worthy of the Man of the Match accolade, but it’s the forward pack that sets the stage for him. He’s a unique and humble individual with remarkable talent, and at just 19, he’s still growing.”
The win was a much-appreciated reward following a challenging three-week tour, with Pietersen acknowledging the difficulties faced while being away from family during that time.
“This has been a tough tour; being away from family for three weeks is never easy, but I’m delighted we managed to secure a win.”
Now that they have achieved the historic triumph at Thomond Park, focus turns to the players set to join the Springboks for their November tour. Pietersen extended his best wishes to those selected, expressing confidence in their capability to excel.
“I want to wish all the best to the players heading on the Bok tour. I am certain they will succeed during the November campaign.”
For the Sharks, this victory was more than just another tour win. It symbolized a pledge of collective dedication, defensive resolve, and the development of a cohesive squad.
Securing a win at Thomond Park for the first time, especially without conceding a try, made the 15-3 victory an unforgettable milestone.
