Mosimane Supports Chaine Following Soweto Derby Mistake

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has staunchly defended his decision to include a significant number of Mamelodi Sundowns players in his squad, which notably features two goalkeepers. He also expressed his support for Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, following his error in the recent Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

Chaine made a mistake by dropping a cross from Mfundo Vilakazi at the FNB Stadium last weekend, which allowed Pule Mmodi to score. However, the Pirates regrouped and came out victorious after Thapelo Mokobodi assisted Tshepang Moremi, who finished into an empty net.

During the announcement of his final squad on Thursday in preparation for the upcoming qualifiers against Benni McCarthy’s Kenya, Mosimane supported Chaine, asserting that there was never any intention to exclude him from the team.

Mosimane cited Chaine’s impressive domestic performances, emphasizing his PSL Golden Glove-winning season and his record of clean sheets.

“Just because Chaine made an error in the Derby doesn’t overshadow his achievements; why not highlight his clean sheet record?” Mosimane questioned.

“Consider his record. Everyone makes mistakes; I’ve made mistakes, too. You might have had your own choices; we all make errors, right? No one is immune to making mistakes.”

During the September and October international breaks, Mosimane also clarified that Chaine was among the team’s vice-captains after taking the helm from Hugo Broos in August.

On another note, Sundowns contributed the largest number of players to Mosimane’s Bafana Bafana squad.

The Brazilians have two goalkeepers, Ricardo Goss and Ronwen Williams, along with defenders Aubrey Modiba, Fawaaz Basadien, Thapelo Morena, and Thabang Matuludi; midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas; as well as forwards Iqraam Rayners, Cassius Mailula, Tashreeq Matthews, and Siyanda Ndlovu.

Nonetheless, concerns linger regarding the fitness of Williams and Mokoena, who have been out for their club’s last two and three matches, respectively.

Mosimane was also questioned about any apprehensions he had concerning complacency in the squad following Bafana’s recent positive performances against Guinea and Eritrea.

The coach noted that he had utilized the previous international break to provide various players with opportunities, including in the team’s 1-0 friendly victory over Egypt.

“To ensure no one becomes too comfortable, it’s essential to offer others a chance and observe their progress in training,” Mosimane stated.

“That’s the only way to foster competition. You may say I selected three goalkeepers, but I utilized all of them during the last FIFA break. Did Ronwen perform well? Absolutely. Did Chaine perform well? Yes. Did Ricardo Goss show he merits a spot on the team? Indeed. There have been times I’ve faced questions about my choice of Sundowns players. The proof is on the field.”

“The focus is not on the club you play for but on whether you are the right person to represent the national team, and Goss certainly fits that bill.”
