Xabi Alonso Makes Surprise Estevao Decision as Chelsea Face Manchester United

According to a report by the Evening Standard on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has handed Estevao a surprise starting opportunity for the Premier League clash against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge after the Brazilian spent much of the season on the fringes of the first team.

The youngster's inclusion represents a significant change in his situation at the club, having struggled to secure regular playing time since Alonso took charge.

Estevao enjoyed more opportunities last season but has found it difficult to establish himself under the Spanish coach this campaign. Before the meeting with Manchester United, he had made only two starts, with both appearances coming in the Carabao Cup.

His limited involvement attracted attention during Chelsea's midweek encounter against Liverpool, when Alonso opted not to introduce him despite the match being level at 1-1 late in the game.

Instead, the manager brought on Emmanuel Emegha for his Chelsea debut. The Dutch forward subsequently missed a penalty during the shootout as the Blues suffered elimination from the competition.

Estevao was also overlooked following Joao Pedro's injury, with another debutant, Geovany Quenda, preferred as his replacement.

However, Alonso has now given the Brazilian an opportunity to demonstrate his qualities against Manchester United, who arrive in west London hoping to end an eight-match winless run.

The 19-year-old's direct dribbling and quick footwork could provide Chelsea with an additional attacking threat against United's struggling defence. His selection also gives him an opportunity to strengthen his position in Alonso's plans.

The Chelsea manager had previously addressed concerns surrounding Estevao's lack of playing time during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Alonso acknowledged that the Brazilian wanted more minutes but insisted that his training performances and attitude had remained positive. He also ruled out the possibility of the youngster leaving Stamford Bridge on loan during the January transfer window.

The Spanish coach explained that he accepted responsibility whenever players were unhappy with their limited opportunities, while stressing that everyone in his squad needed to remain prepared because they could be required in any match.

Estevao's inclusion against Manchester United therefore provides a timely opportunity for the Brazilian to make an impression after a difficult start to the campaign.
