According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday November 1, 2026, Nigerian international Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his delight after scoring his maiden Premier League goal for Coventry City in their 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
Coventry secured all three points in front of their home supporters at the CBS Arena, with Awoniyi getting his name on the scoresheet during an impressive performance from Frank Lampard's side.
The 29-year-old striker scored Coventry's second goal eight minutes before half-time after taking advantage of a defensive mistake from Sunderland.
Awoniyi dispossessed Luke O'Nien before calmly finishing past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs to extend Coventry's advantage in the encounter.
The goal marked an important personal milestone for the Nigerian forward, who was delighted to contribute to his team's victory.
Speaking after the match, Awoniyi played down the importance of his individual achievement, insisting that securing the three points was the most important thing.
He also praised his teammates for their collective performance, explaining that Coventry executed their game plan effectively throughout the encounter.
"I think the most important thing is the three points. I think the team from the outset played good together, the gameplan worked," Awoniyi told the Premier League website.
The former Nottingham Forest striker also highlighted Coventry's counter-pressing approach, which helped create the opportunity that eventually led to his goal.
The victory represents another positive result for Lampard's team as they continue their campaign in the Premier League.
Coventry have now collected nine points from their opening nine league matches this season, with Awoniyi's contribution providing another attacking option for the manager.
The Nigerian striker will hope his maiden goal gives him the confidence to deliver more important performances as the season progresses.
Lampard's side will now turn their attention to their next Premier League assignment, an away encounter against Everton, where Awoniyi will be hoping to continue his goalscoring form.
